Season 9 of Diablo 4, titled Sins of the Horadrim, brings new mechanics and systems that reshape how players build and progress. Among the standout additions are Arcana and Horadric Strongrooms, which play a key role in the seasonal feature: Horadric Spellcraft. Although these systems create new opportunities for customization, they also present challenges, particularly around drop rates and farming efficiency.
This guide focuses on how to efficiently collect Arcana and make the most out of Horadric Strongrooms, even when you're not using specific sigils.
The main system introduced this season is Horadric Spellcraft, which allows players to build custom spells using three key components: one Catalyst, one Infusion, and three pieces of Arcana. Catalysts determine the base spell, Infusions change its elemental type, and Arcana provide unique modifiers.
Arcana are categorized into Magic, Rare, and Legendary tiers. Magic Arcana offer basic spell enhancements, Rare Arcana add stronger passive effects, and Legendary Arcana can completely change how a spell functions with powerful abilities and crowd control.
Players acquire Arcana through Nightmare Dungeons and Horadric Strongrooms, with progression on the seasonal reputation board unlocking higher-tier Arcana. Rare Arcana become available after reaching Tier 3, and Legendary requires Tier 6.
Inside Nightmare Dungeons, players may encounter Horadric Gateways, which lead to Strongrooms. In these rooms, players complete trials, gather Horadric Attunement, face a boss, and receive a final chest that may contain Arcana, recipes, Horadric Jewels, and more.
At the start of Season 9, Arcana were extremely hard to come by. Many players reached level 40 with only one Arcana drop, despite focusing on Nightmare Dungeons and seasonal content. This created a frustrating experience, especially since Arcana are required to progress in the Seasonal Journey.
A major issue was that Arcana did not auto-pickup and shared their color with common loot. Blue Arcana blend in with blue gear, and yellow Arcana with rare items in Diablo 4 Season 9. Players often missed them entirely without realizing it. With many reporting that they had "probably missed tons," it became clear that the visual design was causing confusion.
Fortunately, a July 2 hotfix addressed this by increasing Arcana drop rates in Strongrooms and restoring the ability for Nightmare Dungeon sigils to drop at the end of dungeons. This has made farming Arcana much more viable.
To farm Arcana efficiently:
Run Nightmare Dungeons and look for Horadric Gateways that lead to Strongrooms.
Always check the ground thoroughly after opening Strongroom chests, as Arcana items do not stand out from other loot.
Focus on raising your seasonal reputation, as this unlocks better Arcana tiers. Tier 3 is required for Rare Arcana and Tier 6 for Legendary.
Avoid skipping loot. Even if the chest doesn’t seem to offer what you want, Arcana may still be hiding among the drops.
Noted that it’s possible to get Arcana and Nightmare Escalation Sigils together from Strongroom chests, allowing for a loop of back-to-back runs with improved rewards.
To help you do fast Arcana spell farming with Horadric Strongrooms, here we share an infinite bug to farm Horadric Strongrooms repeatedly. We suggest that you try this out really fast if you're interested, because this is going to get nerfed. You don't need a special sigil to access Horadric Strongrooms. Many Nightmare Dungeons can naturally contain them, and the presence of a Horadric Gateway, marked on your mini-map, is your clue.
The process is straightforward:
Create a New Character
Start by making a new character using the same class as your main. For instance, if your main is a Spiritborn, create another Spiritborn. Don't begin the seasonal questline yet.
Level to 60
Bring this new character up to level 60. You can do this by traditional leveling, using Nightmare Dungeons, Helltides, or Whispers. Boosting in The Pit or transferring Whisper Caches from your main character can speed up the process.
Transfer Gear from Your Main
Once your new character hits level 60, log back into your main. Place your gear in the stash, then log in with your new character and equip that gear. This gives the new character combat readiness without much investment.
Set Up Your Build
Assign skills, activate paragon boards, and equip seasonal powers. Your new character will inherit your seasonal progression, so all previously unlocked seasonal powers will be available.
Unlock Higher Torment Difficulty
Use The Pit to unlock the highest Torment level possible for your new character. For example, clearing Pit 20 unlocks Torment 1. If your stats and gear allow, aim for Torment 4 for better loot.
Begin the Seasonal Questline
Change the game difficulty to the highest Torment level you unlocked. Then, begin the seasonal questline and progress until you reach the early quest titled "The Embers Yet Smolder."
Enter the Quest Dungeon with the Strongroom
This quest sends you into a dungeon that contains a Horadric Strongroom. Complete it as usual: pick your three tests, fill the attunement bar, defeat the boss, and open the reward chest.
Do NOT Pick Up the Quest Item
After looting the chest, leave the Blood Relic quest item on the ground. This prevents the quest from progressing and allows you to re-enter the Strongroom.
Log Out and Back In
After looting, log out. When you log back in, you’ll return to town. From there, re-enter the dungeon and then the Strongroom. Everything resets, allowing you to farm it again.
Repeat the Process
Keep repeating: loot the chest, leave the quest item, log out, log in, and return. You can run the Strongroom as many times as you want.
You can skip the rest of the dungeon after completing the Strongroom. If the Strongroom is done and the dungeon layout is long or annoying, you can choose to leave and start another run.
