Path of Exile 2 patch 0.4 completely reshapes the unique landscape. Many previously “meme-tier” items got massive reworks—removing downsides, adding build-scaling bonuses, and introducing Volbororn crafting that can delete the negative line entirely. Below is PoE 2 0.4 uniques tier list, and explains what makes the best unique items.

This patch made many builds revolve around very specific interactions—Lightning Coil + Scold’s Bridle, Stitched Demon + Ghostwrithe, Soul Tether + Volbororn. Without the right unique combo, you miss out on the core engine that makes these new builds explode in power. Whether you’re a league starter looking for consistency, a theorycrafter trying to break the game, or an endgame pusher optimizing every stat, patch 0.4 makes uniques more relevant than they’ve been at any point in PoE 2’s development. This Path of Exile 2 0.4 unique tier list highlights the best of the best—and why they matter.
Rating: S-Tier for Tactician / Freeze casters.
OLD: Enemies you immobilize take 25% LESS damage… basically killed the item.
NEW: Enemies immobilized by you take 20% MORE damage AND immobilization builds up twice as fast.
Huge synergy with Tactician Pin builds, Freeze builds, and any CC-based spellcaster. Effectively a free 20% more multiplier on gloves, a slot usually hard to scale.
Rating: S-Tier for Cold casters.
Now gives +7 to Cold Spell Skills (up from +4). This alone is a massive DPS spike, far outscaling the lost INT-scaling line. Cold skills scale extremely well with gem levels → Ice Storm and Frost spells become endgame viable. Was already good; now it’s better than ever.
Rating: S-Tier for Scold’s + Coil autocasters.
Physical damage taken as lightning increased from 20–40% → 50%. This buff mathematically doubles the frequency of Velocus Charge procs. When combined with Scold’s Bridle, you self-hit constantly → autocasting high-damage lightning bolts around you. It turns Lightning Coil into a full build engine, not just a gimmick.
Rating: S-Tier Enabler for Velocus Charge builds.
In 0.4, self-hitting builds are MUCH stronger thanks to the Lightning Coil buff. Converts mana spent into 100% of that value as physical self-damage. Self-damage = synergy with:
-Lightning Coil
-Trigger builds
-Any “on damage taken” mechanic
Rating: S-Tier for Leech builds.
Old: -25% max life (a build-killer)
New: +10–15% max life
Overflowing life leech is one of the strongest mechanics in ARPG history. Now works like old PoE1 Slayer overleech without the crippling downside. Turns any leech build into a tank.
Rating: A/S-Tier depending on Volbororn roll.
Volbororn crafting can remove the -5% ES per second downside, which was the ONLY reason nobody used it. If downside disappears → it becomes free ES gain from excess life leech and hybrid ES/Life builds become immortal. Combo with Atziri’s Acuity = instant ES leech.
Rating: S-Tier with Volbororn synergy.
Old downside: Cannot have Energy Shield. Now removable via Volbororn → meaning you get regen based on maximum ES and you keep your ES. With Ghostwrithe (buffed), you convert 35% life → ES. Combined = one of the strongest sustain setups in the game.
Rating: A+/S-Tier when paired with Stitched Demon.
0.4 buffed life→ES conversion from 25% → 35%. Insane synergy with Stitched Demon helmet. Creates a monstrous ES pool and insane recovery loops.
Rating: A/S-Tier depending on new soul cores.
Effectiveness of socketed Soul Cores: 100% → 333%. New socketables coming in 0.4 → huge unknown potential. Shaman ascendancy interacts with socketables heavily. With the right core, this shield becomes meta-breaking.
Rating: A-Tier but can become S with good Volbororn.
Always strong for ES stacking builds. Now a Volbororn Path of Exile 2 item → meaning remove downsides and add powerful new lines. Liches LOVE this helmet.
Rating: S-Tier for crit leech builds.
Instant leech on crit = always broken. Blood Mage, Tactician, and crit casters all love it. Volbororn can add offensive lines, making it even stronger.
Rating: S-Tier for spellcasters.
Still one of the strongest spellcaster shields. Volbororn lets you remove the downside:“Non-channeling spells cost extra life" Removing this turns Rathpith into: A PURE offensive shield. Without needing to compensate for life loss.
Rating: A+/S-Tier for crit builds.
Removing mana-cost downside via Volbororn turns it into BIS for crit stacking. Only ring in the game that gives crit chance and crit multi.
Rating: A/S-Tier depending on build.
Being on Low Life grants Pain Attunement (extra crit damage). Now, Volbororn removes bad lines and adds strong ones. Turns LL caster setups into monsters.
