In Diablo 2 Resurrected, your mercenary can become one of the biggest assets to your character when equipped with the right runewords. The Act 2 mercenary in particular has grown into the most commonly used hireling in the game thanks to his powerful auras and solid melee capabilities. If you're pushing through Hell difficulty, running Terror Zones, or farming bosses, gearing your merc properly will keep him alive and turn him into a real damage-dealing machine.

Runewords are among the most cost-effective ways to gear up your mercenary in D2R. Unlike unique or set items that require lucky drops, runewords can be crafted with runes you farm yourself, and many of the best options use surprisingly cheap runes. The Act 2 mercenary is the most popular choice because of his powerful auras (Might, Prayer, Holy Freeze, Thorns, Blessed Aim, and Defiance), and he benefits enormously from three gear slots: helm, body armor, and weapon (typically a polearm). With that said, let's go over the top runeword options for each slot, starting with helms.
The helm slot for your mercenary is all about survivability, resistances, and utility auras. Here are the top runeword picks worth considering.
Cure is one of the best defensive helms available for your merc. It provides:
5% maximum life
Faster hit recovery
Poison resistance
Level 1 Cleansing Aura – reduces the duration of poisons and curses by 39%
This runeword shines when you're playing builds like a Nova Sorceress where poison is your biggest weakness, since Cleansing Aura from the mercenary removes that vulnerability entirely.
Hearth gives very similar stats to Cure, but with cold resistance and the Cannot Be Frozen stat instead of Cleansing Aura. It's a solid alternative if freeze immunity is a priority.
Bulwark is very similar to Vampire Gaze without the mana leech or cold damage. Key stats include:
20% Faster Hit Recovery
4–6% Life Leech
+30 Replenish Life
10–15% Physical Damage Reduction
Damage Reduced by 7
This one is fantastic for keeping your merc alive during tough fights, and all three runes drop reliably from Nightmare Countess.
Body armor is where you can really pump up your mercenary's damage, resistances, and survivability. These are the top choices.
An easy runeword to make that gives:
75% Enhanced Defense
+280 Defense vs. Missiles
20% Faster Hit Recovery
+50 All Resistances
One of the main reasons mercenaries die in Hell is a lack of resistances, and Smoke fixes that instantly.
A well-balanced offensive and defensive option:
20% Enhanced Damage
+25 Strength, +20 Vitality, +15 Dexterity
+50 Life
+30 All Resistances
One of the most popular merc armors in the entire game:
45% Increased Attack Speed
20% Faster Hit Recovery
Cold Resistance
5% Chance to Cast Level 15 Fade When Struck (60 all resist and 15% physical damage reduction)
The Fade proc lasts for 5 minutes, so even when your merc stops taking hits, he keeps benefiting from the buff. Many players make this at level 43 and never replace it.
A very offensive-oriented armor with:
10–20% Enhanced Damage
Some cold damage
33% Chance of Open Wounds
15% Chance of Crushing Blow
40% Faster Hit Recovery
150–200% Enhanced Defense
Crushing Blow makes it especially good against bosses like Mephisto, Diablo, and Baal.
The runeword with the highest amount of Enhanced Defense (up to 290%) and:
60% Faster Hit Recovery (highest in the game on a single item)
Defense vs. Missiles
+15 All Resistances
Strength and Vitality bonuses
An absolutely powerful endgame armor:
300% Enhanced Damage
20% Chance to Cast Level 15 Chilling Armor When Struck (nearly doubles merc defense)
+1 to 1.5 Life per Character Level
25–30 All Resistances
Many players use Treachery until they get a Lo rune, then switch to Fortitude permanently.
For pure survivability:
8% Life Steal
Damage Reduction
+65 All Resistances
Excellent if you want your merc to just stay alive at all costs, though Fortitude offers more overall value.
Provides a Level 15–21 Thorns Aura, which is extremely useful for a Summon Necromancer who wants his skeleton army to reflect damage back at enemies.
The weapon slot is where your mercenary earns his keep, either through damage output or the aura he provides to your character.
The most iconic mercenary weapon in the game. Its main features:
Level 12–17 Meditation Aura (575% to 700% mana recovery boost)
200–260% Enhanced Damage
Bonus Attack Rating
Critical Strike
Magic Find
Meditation completely eliminates mana problems for casters like Sorceresses, Hammerdins, Javazons, and Bone Necromancers. All four runes drop from normal and Nightmare Countess, making this one of the best value runewords in the game.
If you don't need the Meditation aura, Obedience is one of the strongest damage upgrades:
40% Faster Hit Recovery
370% Enhanced Damage
+20 to 30 All Resistances
40% Chance of Crushing Blow
30% Chance to Cast Level 21 Enchant on Kill
Perfect for physical damage builds:
Level 15–20 Concentration Aura (270–345% damage boost)
25% Chance to Cast Level 17 Firewall When Struck
+300% Bonus to Attack Rating
50–280 Lightning Damage
20% Deadly Strike
Great for Bowazons, Summon Necros, and Summon Druids.
One of the most powerful runewords in the game:
Level 12 Conviction Aura (reduces enemy defense by 83% and resistances by 85%)
255–325% Enhanced Damage
40% Chance of Crushing Blow
-55 to Enemy Lightning Resistance (applies only to the merc's attacks)
Prevent Monster Heal
Infinity is a top pick for Lightning Sorceresses, Javazons, and Assassins who need to break lightning immunities.
Provides a Level 12 Holy Freeze Aura that slows all enemies (even cold immunes) by 50% within 11.3 yards. It also gives:
45% Increased Attack Speed
370% Enhanced Damage
+2 to All Skills (for the merc)
20% Deadly Strike
25% Chance of Open Wounds
Turns your mercenary into an absolute monster:
Up to 400% Enhanced Damage
60% Increased Attack Speed
Up to 15% Life Steal
+30 to All Attributes
Prevent Monster Heal
BOTD made in an ethereal War Pike is the highest-damage weapon in the game, though it's extremely expensive.
If you're just starting out and don't have access to mid-runes or high-runes yet, these budget options will carry you through Normal and into Nightmare.
An extremely early-game weapon usable around level 15:
33% Enhanced Damage
+9 to Maximum Damage
100% Chance of Open Wounds
You can make this in a basic low-level polearm base and it will remain useful until you upgrade.
Required level 25, gives:
35% Enhanced Damage
Life Steal
Strength and Vitality bonuses
25% Crushing Blow
Excellent for low-level bosses since Crushing Blow shreds high-health enemies.
Requires a base with 5 open sockets, but delivers strong stats:
160% Enhanced Damage
+9 to Min and Max Damage
7% Life Steal
+250 Attack Rating
25% Deadly Strike
A budget helmet option that gives:
1–3% Life Steal
Small amount of Deadly Strike
Up to +20 Life
Requires only a Ral rune, a magic/rare jewel, and a perfect ruby, perfect for players just starting out.
While not a merc slot, worth remembering: Rhyme's cheap runes make it useful across your account.
Once you've built up some rune wealth, these are the top picks specifically for scaling your Act 2 mercenary into the endgame.
Andariel's Visage (a unique) is ideal for Act 2 mercs with 20% Increased Attack Speed and 8–10% Life Steal. If you don't have it, Bulwark is the best budget alternative with its life leech, physical damage reduction, and replenish life.
For most builds, Fortitude is the top merc armor thanks to its 300% Enhanced Damage, Chilling Armor proc, and huge life bonus. Treachery serves as an excellent stepping stone until you can afford a Lo rune.
Insight - if you need mana regeneration (casters)
Infinity - if you're a Lightning Sorceress or Javazon
Pride - for physical builds like Bowazon, Summon Necromancer, or Summon Druid
Obedience - if you want raw damage without needing an aura
Doom - for the Holy Freeze slowing effect
Breath of the Dying - if maximum merc damage is your goal
A very popular Act 2 mercenary endgame build for a Nova Sorceress is:
Helm: Cure (for Cleansing Aura)
Armor: Fortitude (for damage + Chilling Armor)
Weapon: Insight in an Ethereal Cryptic Axe or Colossus Voulge (for Meditation aura)
This setup keeps your merc tanky, keeps your mana flowing, and covers you against poison and curses, the perfect trifecta for pushing through Hell and beyond.
Gearing your mercenary in D2R doesn't have to be expensive. Insight, Bulwark, and Treachery alone will carry you comfortably into Hell difficulty, and once you start finding higher-tier runes, upgrading to Fortitude, Infinity, or Pride opens up an entirely new level of power for your character. Pick the combination that best supports your build, farm up those Countess runs, and you'll have your Act 2 mercenary shredding through Hell in no time.
