The Forbidden Rites league in Path of Exile 2 introduces mechanics that reward toughness and damage over pure zoom-zoom playstyles, so picking the right league starter matters more than ever. With Trial of Chaos expanding to 30 floors and wisp-infused deli maps piling difficulty on top of already brutal content, the builds that will carry you into juiced endgame are the ones that combine solid survivability with strong damage output. Here we are going to walk through the PoE 2 0.5.5 Build Tier List, explaining why certain builds sit above others and which league starters give you the smoothest ramp into the hardest content the game currently offers.
PoE 2 0.5.5 Tier List - Best League Starter Builds for Forbidden Rites
Patch 0.5.5 shifts the meta toward well-rounded characters. Since nothing is being nerfed and the additions like Wildwood Wisps only stack more buffs on top of the enemy pool, mobs will hit harder and take more punishment. Trial of Chaos across 30 floors compounds this by piling negative modifiers onto your character. Speed still matters, but it now takes a back seat to damage and survivability. With that context in mind, here are the builds ranked by how easily they climb toward the toughest content on a fresh economy.
Why the Meta Favors Tanky, High-Damage Builds This League
Before jumping into the rankings, it helps to know the criteria behind them. This tier list assumes nothing changes from 0.5 to 0.5.5, and it grades builds on three factors in this order: damage, survivability, and speed.
The reasoning is simple. Farming the hardest content such as 30-floor Trial of Chaos, 200% deli with Wildwood Wisps stacked on top, strongbox wisp packs, expedition, and the rest requires a build that can eat hits while also chewing through inflated monster HP pools. The glassy zoom-zoom archetypes from prior leagues will start dying in juiced content the moment they meet a tanky rare. With that framing in place, let's look at what sits on top.
SS Tier: The Strongest League Starters in 0.5.5
These three builds combine low gear requirements, huge damage, and solid tankiness. They handle the toughest content earliest and scale well without needing a massive currency injection.
1. Hollow Form Martial Artist
Absolutely top tier. Has everything you want: tanky, works on a shoestring budget, and does damage without needing much gear. It's not the fastest build since you have to hold down the channel button and whirl around, but it just works. Jung Ron has a very good version, and Prada is league starting this, so their guides are worth following.
2. Grim Pillars Totems (Oracle)
Grim Pillars are going to be insane. Because the Runes of Aldur mechanic is no longer the main league mechanic, you cannot play Grim Pillars until Act 4, but you can level as a spellcaster with Plants or Arc spell totems until then. Totem builds are naturally defensive because you stay outside the fight while placing totems and cracking pillars with Plants or Entangle. Grim Pillars pump massive damage at base without needing much gear. Paleron has a very good Oracle version. Gemling starts further from the totem node and really wants Split Personality to shine, which is why Oracle is the better recommendation here.
3. Oil Grenade Flame Blast Gemling
This build needs almost no gear. Flame Blast scales incredibly well off itself thanks to alternate quality, which grants roughly 40% more magnitude per sage. The ignite magnitude you get from Gemling Flame Blast is just dumb. Yes, they killed infinite Incinerate damage stacking last league, but the alternate quality carries this entire build. Bare-bones minimum gear and it still melts. Josiah Yeet has a solid guide for this one.
4. Ice Shot Deadeye
Ice Shot Deadeye remains one of the strongest bow starters ever printed, second only to the 0.3 lightning Deadeye. It starts as a combo-based build with Ice Shot and Snipe, then evolves into a one or two button Ice Shot / Ino Shot build once geared. You get bonus movespeed nodes and Tailwind right from the ascendancy, giving you close to double the map speed of the field. Bow builds do want more funding to hit the ceiling and Ice Shot tankiness is on the lower end, so pushing 30-floor Trial of Chaos or maxed wisps takes extra investment. FubGun's full mobalytics guide is updated for 0.5, and JTX's Bleed Ice Shot version is a strong alternative.
5. Gemling Twisters
Twisters can be played on nearly any ascendancy such as Amazon, Ritualist, Martial Artist, Oracle, even Invoker, but Gemling stands as the strongest variant for quality of life, damage, speed, and tankiness combined. Deadeye is a solid league-start alternative, while Lich Twisters really wants gear before it comes online and works better as a second character. Spirit Walker feels clunky because of the required dodge rolls, and the build already has enough speed and damage without that added rotation. The reason Twisters sits in S rather than SS is that the build kills you if you don't kill enemies first, in wide-open maps like Grand Expedition, damage can dip until you hit taming and proper gear. Red Balls and Nick 2 both have guides.
S Tier: Strong Starters That Need a Bit More Investment
The next tier down covers builds that are excellent but either run squishier or plateau earlier in scaling. Each one is still fully capable of clearing all content in the game, they just want a bit more funding to comfortably push 30-floor Trial of Chaos or 200% deli with wisps.
6. Disciple Verashta Minion Build
One of the smoothest campaigns available. The moment you get your first ascendancy and Kaari, everything melts. With Puppet Master, Archon of Undeath, and later Dominion Anointed, you cruise all the way to Tier 15 maps with minimal gear. The build plateaus once you push past that point because minion scaling still relies heavily on skill levels, but the early-to-mid experience is unmatched. Blaze Works TV is doing an SSF guide, and Gazzi is running Verashta this league too.
7. Shield Wall Infernalist (Nebulock)
Shield Wall Infernalist is a sleeper pick. Extremely tanky, tons of damage, and explodes packs on contact. The only reason it isn't higher is the Nebulock requirement, once you have that piece, the build absolutely rips. Funky Chicken plays this build on Infernalist and is worth a 100% follow.
8. Galvanic Shards Tactician
Tactician is a wildly underrated ascendancy that hands out damage, survivability, CC, and utility in one package. Galvanic Shards on Tactician is probably the best crossbow build available right now, scaling from campaign all the way to multi-mirror territory. It transitions into a one-button crossbow build for endgame mapping and holds up in every relevant farming form. Rue 2 has a detailed guide on mobalytics.
9. Whirling Assault Martial Artist
Whirling Assault lands in the same neighborhood as grenades in terms of raw power. It gets tanky but plays slower and stationary, relying on killing enemies before they close in. If you slot it into a Hollow Form frame it belongs at SS tier, but as a standalone build it comfortably sits in S.
10. Oil Barrage Wyvern (Martial Artist)
Oil Barrage produces absurd damage at almost no gear investment. It could arguably sit higher on pure damage, but the channeling is stationary, you stand still for two to three seconds per pack, which invites hits. The Martial Artist version is the recommended one because bells solve the power charge problem cleanly, and Ageless Charms help later on. Clear speed lags behind faster options, but for boss killing and single-target burst, few builds compete at this budget. J-Mack has the go-to Martial Artist version.
A Tier: Solid Choices With Notable Weaknesses
Below S tier are builds that still work well as starters but come with specific downsides worth knowing about before committing.
11. Gemling Explosive Grenades
Grenades give you one of the smoothest campaigns in the game — literally what speedrunners use to blast through Acts. It stays strong the first 10 hours, but slowly gets outscaled by other builds in terms of clear, budget efficiency, and speed past the 20 to 30 hour mark. The playstyle also involves waiting for grenades to detonate, and a wisp-infused wasp closing on you while you kite feels bad. Best used as a transition build to farm currency before swapping to a stronger Gemling variant.
12. Poison Burst Arrow Chayula
Still good but noticeably flimsier than the top picks, and Toxic Bloom took hits between last patch and this one. On no gear it lags behind Oil Grenade by a wide margin. Garatha has the go-to Chayula version.
13. Spirit Walker Tame Beast (Monkey Build)
Tame Beast Huntress is very strong once geared, but on league start the clear is genuinely rough, this is by far the slowest build on the list for mapping. It really wants a crit monkey to pop off, plus a full zoo setup and a splash minion belt with plus-two minions before clear feels acceptable. Boss damage is high, so if you can tolerate slow Atlas progression it works, but faster options handle Forbidden Rites better. Elgazzi and DM played it last league.
14. Lich Plants / Entangle Build
Similar in feel to Essence Drain Contagion, but Entangle can crit, letting you slot Cast on Crit for damage scaling. That opens up options EDC lacks. Still wants funding to push the highest content. Oracle and Abyssal Lich versions both work.
15. Falling Thunder Monk / Martial Artist
Falling Thunder needs gear to shine. Ageless Chimes are almost mandatory for the build to feel good, and power charge sustain is genuinely tough compared to something like Oil Barrage. On Gemling it wants quality and additional support, so it never hits the same low-budget ceiling as SS tier picks. Etchy Corbin is the go-to guide maker for monk quarterstaff content.
16. Spark Sorceress
Spark Sorc lives and dies by the Adorna's wand. Without it, this build is B tier at best, mediocre early game, mid campaign, mid mapping. With Adorna's online (typically 2 to 5 divines on league start), it jumps to S+ tier and pushes millions of DPS with chaos on amulet. The buff-management playstyle isn't for everyone since you have to refresh Adorna's every minute or so inside maps.
17. Support and Fire Tactician
Another very solid, no-drama pick. Once your skill hits level 30 to 36, you can use it as your main one-button clear and single target all the way to Tier 15s and 200% deli, plus every boss in the game. Doesn't excel in any one area but has no real downsides either.
B Tier: Builds Better Saved for Later
Some popular picks just don't line up with what this league demands, and it's worth pointing them out so you know what to avoid on a fresh economy.
18. Essence Drain Contagion Lich
Fine for mapping, decent for bossing, but as monster HP climbs the damage falls off hard. The Gemling Flame Blast EDC version is stronger for single target, but Gemling on the top-right of the tree gets no spell damage nodes until level 19-20, which turns the campaign into a grind. League-starting this is very rough without funding for Split Personality. Dead Rabbit and Fracks both make guides for it.
19. Bear Shaman
Bear Shaman has fallen off the meta quite a bit. It's an okay build that clears all content, but the Rampage-based playstyle brings its own clunk. Nothing recommends it over any A or S tier pick.
20. Melee Ice Strike / Lunar Assault / Rampage
Melee builds generally struggle in tough leagues where content is meaty and hits hurt. These land around B or even C tier for this specific league.
The through-line for 0.5.5 is that you want a build that stays alive when the game piles modifiers on top of modifiers, and still puts out enough damage to chew through inflated HP pools. Speed is a bonus, not the goal. Hollow Form Martial Artist, Grim Pillars Oracle, and Oil Grenade Flame Blast Gemling are the safest bets to hit the strongest content early and comfortably. Everything in S tier is fully viable with a bit more investment. Pick the playstyle you enjoy from the top of the list, follow one of the recommended builders, and Forbidden Rites should be a smooth ride from campaign into the deepest juice the league has to offer.
