Nintendo revealed a whole bunch of Mario-related announcements in a surprise Direct for Super Mario's 35th anniversary which is being celebrated this month with it being 35 years since the original release of the game. There has been a lot of speculation amongst the Animal Crossing community over the last few weeks that any directs or announcements surrounding this huge milestone may also include details for a potential Super Mario crossover with Animal Crossing New Horizons. Having Mario-themed furniture isn’t new to the Animal Crossing franchise. In fact, all the previous games in the series have added Mario-themed furniture. Originally, though, you could only get these special furniture via events and promotions. Super Mario Crossover Release Time - When Will Super Mario Crossover Come To ACNH?
Nintendo did in fact include a small announcement that there will be a Super Mario crossover with Animal Crossing. The only other details is the release date - March 2021, so in about six months. At first you might think it's pretty strange that Mario themed furniture items would be delayed for so long, but there's probably a good reason Mario day is celebrated in March on the 10th which has become kind of the universal date of Mario, so it's probably a safe bet that any Mario furniture distributed in New Horizons will likely be available on this day.

In terms of how they'll be distributed it's likely they'll be available in the seasonal or promotional section of the Nook Shop which is accessible inside the Resident Services or through the shopping app on the Nook Phone. It's not for sure but it's unlikely there will be an actual in-game event or anything hosted at the plaza because it seems it's only Super Mario furniture that's being added, plus this is consistent with previous Animal Crossing games where the Nintendo in the Direct and Mario themed furniture items were distributed through in-game mechanics such as Fortune Cookies, which you could get using Play Coins (Play Coins could be earned by using the 3DS’ pedometer). There was never really any events attached to these kinds of furniture items. The Mario furniture items will also be supplied in online store as long as the Super Mario Crossover releasaed.
