PoE 2 0.5 Best Runeforging Uniques & How to Runeforge

2026/6/2 16:05:51

Runeforging is a new crafting mechanic introduced in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5. This system brings a groundbreaking change to early and mid-game unique items, letting players upgrade low-tier, underused unique weapons and armor to make them viable for endgame content. Many players hit a common roadblock after reaching level 78: they collect crafting currencies and find the Verisium Anvil, yet lack the option to runeforge unique items. This guide will break down PoE 2 0.5 Unique Runeforging unlock steps, exact crafting process, best unique items to prioritize, and critical tips.

PoE 2 Unique Runeforging

PoE 2 0.5 Runeforging Guide

Runeforging is a crafting system centered on the Verisium Anvil and Verisium currency. Unlike regular crafting that modifies item affixes randomly, Runeforging focuses on boosting the base power of equipment and adding a unique defensive layer called Runic Ward. It has two core functions in Patch 0.5: upgrading non-unique gear and reforging unique items for massive power improvements.

Three core terms are essential to master the mechanic:

  • Verisium: The only core currency for Runeforging. It drops from monsters spawned by Ezomyte Remnants across the game world. All Runeforging operations, whether adding Runic Ward or upgrading unique items, consume Verisium.

  • Runic Ward: A special protective shield separate from your health and energy shield. It acts as an extended life pool to absorb incoming damage. Importantly, Runic Ward cannot block one-shot kills completely. If the combined value of your health, energy shield, and Runic Ward is not enough to withstand a hit, you will still take damage or die. It also links to new runic skills unlocked in the endgame.

  • Runic Alloys: Supplementary crafting materials for Runeforging. Different types of alloys remove random item modifiers and augment new ones. Players can collect and trade all Runic Alloy variants through the in-game currency exchange panel.

How to Unlock PoE 2 Runeforging?

Most players fail to unlock Unique Runeforging because they skip critical side quests in the campaign Acts 2, 3, and 4. Basic non-unique Runeforging unlocks early, but the ability to reforge unique weapons and armor requires completing a full chain of hidden campaign quests. Follow this complete process to unlock all Runeforging features without missing steps.

Step 1: Complete Act 2 Runeseeker Quest (Basic Runeforging Access)

Exit the endgame mapping content first and travel back to any Act 2 campaign zone. Open your map to track the Runeseeker quest, which most players overlook during leveling. The quest requires you to explore the Bone Pits zone to find hidden rune stones. While exploring the Bone Pits, watch for the NPC Pharaoh. When Pharaoh waves his tool, it indicates a nearby rune-related secret. Locate and interact with the preserved witness cave entrance triggered by Pharaoh’s signal, then clear the cave to finish the Act 2 Runeseeker quest. Completing this rewards basic Runic Alloy materials and unlocks preliminary Verisium Anvil functions for non-unique gear.

Step 2: Complete Act 3 Rune Quests (Unlock Unique Runeforging Core)

This is the most critical step to enable unique item reforging. Travel to Act 3’s Jungle Ruins zone, where you will find another rune stone marked by Pharaoh’s tool-waving hint. Interact with the runestone here, then proceed to the Infested Barrens zone. Locate the hidden Mystic Refuge cave in the Infested Barrens. Clear the entire refuge area and access the runic vault inside. Finishing this Act 3 quest chain permanently unlocks the Unique Runeforging feature on your Verisium Anvil. After this step, you can place unique items into the anvil for upgrading, which was previously unavailable.

Step 3: Complete Act 4 Expedition Quests (Unlock All Runeforging Recipes)

To unlock every advanced Runeforging recipe and maximize the system’s potential, you must finish the Act 4 Plunder's Point expedition quest. This is another easily missed side content in the campaign. Complete the standard expedition encounter at Plunder's Point, then turn in the quest to NPC Dan. Follow Danig’s guidance to travel to the Deserted Post zone. Clear the Deserted Post and read the ancient tome at the end of the area. This final step unlocks all remaining Runeforging recipes for endgame unique crafting.

In Patch 0.5, the expedition mechanic is no longer integrated with the Atlas map system. It exists as an independent league mechanic. You cannot trigger expeditions by modifying Atlas maps or gain Atlas tree points from expedition content. Still, you can boost expedition rewards via the main Atlas global passive tree to improve Runeforging material drops.

How to Runeforge Unique Items in PoE 2 0.5?

Once you fully unlock Unique Runeforging, you can start upgrading your unique gear at the hideout’s Verisium Anvil. Below is the step-by-step crafting flow and core mechanic rules.

Step 1: Prepare Required Materials & Items

You only need two core things for unique Runeforging: a target unique item and sufficient Verisium currency. You do not need to carry the unique item in your inventory—you can directly pull items from your stash for crafting, which saves inventory space.

Step 2: Place Unique Item in the Verisium Anvil

Open the Verisium Anvil interface in your hideout. Select the unlocked unique crafting tab, then place your target unique weapon or armor into the crafting slot. The anvil will automatically display the predicted crafting results, cost, and stat changes before you confirm.

Step 3: Confirm Crafting & Accept Stat Trade-Offs

Click the craft button to spend Verisium and complete the Runeforging process. The final effect depends entirely on the item level of your unique gear, with two distinct scaling modes:

  • Items Below Item Level 55: These low-level uniques receive pure positive upgrades. Weapons gain a large boost to base physical and elemental damage. Armor pieces gain improved base defense stats (armor, evasion, energy shield) and a solid amount of Runic Ward with no negative trade-offs. This turns useless early-game uniques into viable mid-game gear.

  • Items At or Above Item Level 55: High-level unique items get massive Runic Ward boosts but come with clear trade-offs. Their original base defense stats (armor, evasion, energy shield) will drop slightly, while Runic Ward and overall defensive layer value increase significantly. High-level unique weapons gain extra energy shield and damage output to offset minor stat losses.

The main goal of unique Runeforging is to extend the lifespan of low-level uniques. Most upgraded low-tier uniques can carry players through white and yellow map endgame content. Some high-potential uniques may even compete with late-game rare gear after multiple upgrades (multiple upgrade attempts are currently unconfirmed but highly anticipated).

Best Unique Items to Runeforge in PoE 2 0.5

The official design intent of Unique Runeforging is to buff non-endgame viable low-level uniques. Already overpowered endgame uniques may not receive upgrade access. Since the exact low-level item threshold is unconfirmed (likely level 20–40), the following five uniques have the highest upgrade potential and are worth prioritizing for Runeforging in Patch 0.5.

1. Pillar of the Caged God (Quarterstaff)

This quarterstaff was a meta staple in PoE 2 Patch 0.1, famous for its powerful stat-stacking and Herald chaining build synergy. It becomes obsolete after level 30 in the current live version due to low base stats. After Runeforging, it has the potential to return to endgame viability. Possible upgrades include increased melee strike range, higher area/attack speed bonus, and improved strength-scaling weapon damage. Even a simple base physical damage boost will make it a competitive mid-to-late game quarterstaff for melee builds.

2. Widowhail (Bow)

Widowhail Crude Bow is the most anticipated unique for Runeforging due to its flexible upgrade potential. A basic flat physical damage upgrade will greatly improve its endgame consistency. If the system buffs its signature quiver bonus effect (potentially raising it from 150% to 300%–400%), Widowhell will become a top-tier all-round bow for most bow builds. It is worth saving and upgrading for long-term endgame use.

3. Ironbound Warden Bow (0.5 New Unique)

This brand-new unique bow added in 0.5 is already strong for Warbringer and Titan builds without any upgrades. Runeforging will push its potential to a new level. A simple base physical damage increase will drastically boost its DPS. If multiple upgrades are allowed, this bow can dominate mid-endgame Warbringer builds. Many players are starting new league characters specifically to build around this upgraded bow.

4. Doomfletch (Bow)

Doomfletch Composite Bow is a low-level bow with a powerful unique modifier: 100% of physical damage added as extra cold, fire, and lightning damage. It already works well in high-investment Ritualist builds but suffers from low base physical damage. Runeforging’s flat physical damage boost will fix its biggest flaw. When paired with Ritualist life-stacking builds (8,000+ maximum life with three Bursting Decay rings), an upgraded Doomfletch can become one of the strongest bows in the patch. Note that this build is high-cost and not friendly for league starts, best for late-game currency-heavy play.

5. Rampart Raptor (Crossbow)

Rampart Raptor Tense Crossbow is already viable for late-game weapon swap mechanics and special damage-capture techniques with Spearfield and Riven Armor. Runeforging will further polish its performance. Even minor base damage upgrades will make it a must-have for technical endgame builds. It excels in ammo-skill focused playstyles and offers unique mechanical value that rare crossbows cannot replicate.

Prioritize Runeforging low-level uniques (sub-55) first for zero-loss upgrades. Save high-level unique reforging for endgame defensive builds that need extra Runic Ward to survive tough map content, even with minor base stat drops. In addition,  Ezomyte Remnants are the best source of Verisium, Runes, and Runic Alloys. Focus on farming Remnant encounters during leveling and endgame to stock up enough materials for mass unique Runeforging.
