The Path of Exile 2 0.5 patch completely reshapes the early meta, destroys several dominant archetypes, and massively buffs a few builds that were already sitting near the top of the game. Read this PoE 2 0.5 build tier list, ranking the best builds for Return of the Ancients.

In Path of Exile 2, having a strong build matters more than ever because the entire league is built around faster progression, tougher encounters, and heavily rebalanced systems. A weak or outdated build can quickly hit a wall once you enter higher-tier maps, league mechanics, or endgame bosses, especially after the massive nerfs introduced in Patch 0.5. The Return of the Ancients league significantly changes the meta. Many previously dominant builds lost huge amounts of damage, survivability, or sustain.
This is easily the biggest loser of the patch. Poison Pathfinder relied onmassive poison stacking, long poison durations, overlapping Toxic Growth explosions, insane scaling from duration and magnitude. GGG basically attacked every layer simultaneously: duration, scaling, mobility, overlap mechanics, and projectile count. The Toxic Growth limit change alone is close to a 50%+ damage loss.
This affects a massive number of builds. Nearly every ES passive got reduced faster recharge start, recharge rate, max ES, and sustain. ES is probably still viable, but no longer absurdly overpowered.
This is a game-wide meta shift.
This is one of the most important systemic changes. You can now only benefit from ONE leech instance per resource at a time. Still playable probably, but no longer immortal. Huge nerf to sustain identity.
Infernal Legion was overperforming hard. Infernal Legion 3 removed entirely. Now core scaling got halved, ignite scaling weakened, overall DPS massively reduced. The archetype likely disappears from S-tier completely.
This was the infamous screen-clearing fire chain build. Now damage consistency drops, clear speed drops, gameplay becomes less explosive. Still potentially playable, especially in dense maps, but no longer absurd.
This overlaps somewhat with Blood Mage, but affects more than just one ascendancy. Now sustain scaling is capped, recovery becomes delayed, burst tanking becomes dangerous. This changes how endgame spellcasters survive entirely. Glass cannon casters now need real defenses again.
Whirling Assault took one of the most dangerous “hidden nerfs” in the patch. Melee attacks can now only apply splash damage once per damaging area. Whirling Assault previously benefited from multiple overlapping damage zones while spinning through enemies. Against bosses, those overlapping hits massively boosted single-target DPS.
Shield Wall setups got multiple direct nerfs. Reduced Shield Wall damage scaling. Less damage gained from shield armor. Fortifying Cry interaction fixed. Still likely solid for campaign and early maps, but much weaker for high-end scaling.
The popular Ice Wolf archetype got quietly gutted. Lunar Blessing Moon Beams are no longer considered melee skills. Ice Wolf should still function, but the top-end version lost a lot of power.
Oil Barrage builds were already dominating certain content, so GGG toned them down. Lower overall damage. New continuous mana drain while channeling. Not completely dead, but much less comfortable and far less explosive.
Beyond Whirling Assault specifically, many melee overlap mechanics got hit indirectly. The splash-damage restriction affects Multi-zone melee attacks. Overlapping AoE interactions. Certain strike + splash combinations,
Tempest Bell Monk looks like the biggest overall winner of Patch 0.5. Maximum active bells increased from 1 → 3. Tempest Bell can now receive ancestral strike bonuses. Massive effective single-target scaling. This build was already top tier before the patch. Now it could become one of the strongest league starters and boss killers in the game.
Outside of Infernal Legion, minions got major upgrades. More minion modifiers available on rings and belts. Better gearing options overall. New Minion Splash support for melee minions. The Minion Splash change is enormous. Minions are looking extremely safe for league start.
Snipe Deadeye may become one of the strongest bossing builds in Patch 0.5. Mirage Deadeye can now use channeling skills like Snipe. This is absurdly powerful. Now your Mirage clone can channel Snipe for you. You keep moving and clearing. The clone potentially handles perfect Snipe timing automatically. That removes the biggest downside of the skill.
Twister builds are massive winners simply because they survived untouched. Twisters received basically no meaningful nerfs. New Huntress ascendancy synergizes perfectly with them. That effectively makes them stronger relative to the rest of the game because so many competing builds were nerfed.
