Animal Crossing
Have you ever scrolled through social media, stumbled upon a stunning Animal Crossing island, and thought to yourself, “Am I even playing the same game as these people?”You’re not alone. The secret behind those jaw-dropping builds—charming bookstores, cozy cafes, entire cityscapes—is the wonderful world of Custom Design codes.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has always had a certain magic to it. But one thing the game rarely explains on its own is how to use custom codes. It’s the kind of feature that everyone talks about but few actually walk you through. If you’ve ever wondered how players build fake pools, line up realistic brick roads, or park a hippie van in the middle of their island, this guide is for you.

Before you can share or download codes, you need to know how to make them. Here’s a quick walkthrough:
Step 1: Open the Custom Designs App
Find the Custom Designs app on your NookPhone. If it’s not there yet, don’t worry—it unlocks early in the game after you’ve settled into island life.
Step 2: Pick a Blank Slot
Select any empty square, or choose an existing design you want to edit. You’ll enter a grid-based editor where you can draw pixel by pixel using a variety of tools and colors.
Step 3: Draw Your Design
This is where the fun begins. Use the pencil, bucket fill, eraser, and other tools to create your pattern. Keep in mind that designs are made on a 32×32 grid, so working pixel-by-pixel gives you the most control.
Step 4: Unlock Pro Designs
For more advanced work—like making clothing with proper sleeves, umbrellas, or face-cutout standees—you’ll need Pro Designs. This upgrade is available for purchase at Nook’s Cranny. Once unlocked, you’ll see a new tab in the Custom Designs app marked with two little stars around the pencil icon. To switch between regular designs and Pro Designs, simply press R.
Common Mistake: Many players miss the Pro Designs tab entirely because it’s hidden one press of the R button to the right. Don’t let that be you!
Step 5: Share Your Creations
Once Able Sisters’ shop is unlocked, walk up to the clothes on the back wall and display your designs. Your villagers might even start wearing them! You can also share your Creator ID (starts with MA-) or individual Design IDs (starts with MO-) so that anyone on the internet can download your work.
Understanding the Code Format
All ACNH custom design codes follow a simple pattern:
Creator ID always starts with MA- (e.g., MA-6241-0829-6960). Searching a Creator ID shows you everything that person has ever uploaded. This is usually the better option—you never know what other gems you’ll discover.
Design ID always starts with MO- (e.g., MO-K7T0-NDFP-9QDQ). Searching a Design ID takes you straight to one specific design.
Where to Search in the Game
Head to Able Sisters’ shop and interact with the kiosk near the back.
From the kiosk menu, you can search in three ways:
By Creator ID— see a designer’s full collection
By Design ID— jump to one specific item
By Criteria— type a design name and filter by type (available since update 1.4.0)
You can also favoritecreators you love by pressing X on any of their designs.
Where to Find Codes Online
The ACNH community is incredibly generous about sharing designs. Here are the best places to look:
Social Media: Search hashtags like #ACNHDesignCodes, #ACNH, #AnimalCrossingDesigns, #ACNHDesign, and #ACNHcodes on Twitter/X, Instagram, and Pinterest.
Reddit: Subreddits like r/AnimalCrossing and r/ac_newhorizons are packed with curated code lists and designer spotlights.
Google It: Sometimes the simplest method works best. Search for what you need—for example, “red brick building code ACNH” or “cozy sweater pattern ACNH”—and you’ll often find blog posts, video pinned comments, or social media threads with exact codes.
YouTube: Many ACNH creators pin design codes in the comments of their build tour videos.
Pro Tip: When you find a design you like, write down the Creator ID instead of just the individual Design ID. The creator may have an entire collection of designs in the same style, and you’ll want to explore all of them.
Prerequisites
Before you start downloading, make sure you have:
✅ Able Sisters’ shop unlocked
✅ An active Nintendo Switch Online subscription
✅ A stable internet connection
✅ The Custom Design Portalfully unlocked in-game
Once you’ve downloaded codes, the real creativity begins. Here are three main ways to use them:
1. Laying Down Custom Paths
Tired of the default grass, sand, and dirt paths from the Island Construction tool? Custom codes let you create anything—from asphalt roads to cobblestone streets to fairy-tale gumdrop lanes.
How to do it:
Download a path design using the Creator or Design ID.
Open the Island Construction appon your NookPhone.
Tap the icon in the bottom-right corner to access your custom paths.
Select your downloaded design and start “paving.”
Your character will hold a paver and lay down the design tile by tile. It takes a little practice, especially when switching between different path types, but the results are worth it.
2. Customizing Items with Simple Panels
This is the secret behind those impressive building facades. By applying custom codes to Simple Panels, you can create the illusion of entire buildings.
How to do it:
Craft or buy Simple Panels (the dark wood variant is especially popular).
Grab some customization kits.
Head to any DIY workbench.
Select “Customize something” and scroll right to the pencil icon to access your downloaded custom designs.
Apply the design to the Simple Panel.
Once customized, items appear as a lighter green in your inventory. Place them strategically with decorative pillars, bookshelves, and gazebos to create multi-story buildings, shopfronts, and more. This technique is so popular in the community that it has a nickname: “artfully deceptive design.”
Terraforming Tip: Want a two-story building? Terraform a cliff behind your ground-level panels, climb up with a ladder, and place more panels on the upper level. Layering is everything!
3. Using Pro Designs for Creative Builds
Pro Designs unlock even more possibilities. By switching to the Pro Designs tab in the Custom Designs portal (press R), you can create:
Face-cutout standees— these are used to make everything from bus shelters to hippie vans
Umbrellas that look like apple crates or other objects
Full outfits with proper long sleeves, dresses, and layered looks
The face-cutout shapes, in particular, are a game-changer. They’re the reason players can have a vintage bus, a pirate ship, or a train carriage parked on their island—all without any actual vehicle items in the game.
4. Importing Designs from Previous Games
If you played Animal Crossing: New Leaf or Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, you can bring your old QR code designs into ACNH:
Download the Nintendo Switch Online app (iOS or Android).
Open the NookLink service for ACNH.
Select Custom Designsto scan QR codes from the older games.
In ACNH, open the Custom Designs app and press R to switch to Pro Designs.
Your imported designs will appear here—wear them, display them, or edit them.
Below is a hand-picked selection of popular Animal Crossing design codes from 2026, organized by category. All codes are from online sources. Where available, the creator’s social media handle is included so you can explore their full portfolio.

The cottagecore aesthetic is arguably the most beloved style in ACNH. Think flower meadows, wooden fences, picnics by the river, and sun-dappled garden paths.

Bookstore / Cafe Build
Using the artfully deceptive design technique described earlier, you can combine:
Simple Panelscustomized with brick or storefront designs
Decorative Pillarsfor building corners
Bookshelvesturned backward to serve as walls
Stallscustomized with shop awning designs
This combination lets you create convincing buildings without any actual building items. The Halloween Stall designs listed above are perfect for this kind of project.
Stock up on Simple Panels and Customization Kits. They are the backbone of almost every impressive build. Keep at least 20–30 panels on hand for larger projects.
Use Creator IDs, not just Design IDs.A single Creator ID can unlock dozens of coordinated designs in the same style. It’s like finding a whole collection instead of one piece.
Layer your paths.Don’t just use one path type. Mix asphalt for roads, tiles for patios, and natural stone for garden trails. The contrast adds realism.
Customize everything you can. Many players forget that stalls, umbrellas, easels, and even some furniture can take custom designs. Check the full list of customizable items to unlock hidden potential.
Follow creators on social media. Most ACNH designers post on Instagram, Twitter, or Lemon8. Following them means you’ll see new designs as they drop—especially helpful around seasonal events.
Don’t forget Pro Designs. The face-cutout shapes (umbrellas, standing boards, etc.) are underused by casual players but are essential for advanced builders who want vehicles, signposts, and multi-layer structures.
Organize your designs.Name your downloaded designs clearly so you can find them later. The portal can get cluttered fast once you’ve downloaded hundreds of codes.
